Our behaviours support our mental health… and our mental health supports our behaviours. When those two are in sync, life feels smoother. But when they're at odds?
Things get bumpy.
It seems pretty straightforward — do the good things, right?
So… why don’t we?
So many of my clients come to me saying exactly that:
“Why do I do what I don’t want to do?”
They know what they “should” be doing — getting more sleep, exercising, not snapping at their partner, stopping at one glass of wine, doing ‘the work’, and journaling. They want it. And yet… they don’t follow through. Or they sabotage. Or they circle back into old patterns.
Here’s one possible explanation: There’s a conflict between your conscious and subconscious mind.
Your conscious mind might be trying to implement change — logic, planning, willpower.
Your subconscious mind is running old programs — protection, emotion, past experience, survival habits.
It’s not always about laziness or lack of discipline. Often, it’s about a disagreement between two parts of you, where the subconscious — faster, more powerful, more emotionally charged — wins.
That’s not to say every unwanted behaviour is caused by a subconscious conflict… but if you’ve ever felt stuck, like something is hijacking your best intentions, it’s worth exploring that terrain.
What helps?
Curiosity over criticism — Instead of “What’s wrong with me?” try “Could part of me benefit from this in some way?”
Gentle observation — Track patterns with compassion. Behaviour always has a reason, even if it’s outdated.
Nervous system awareness — Dysregulation often triggers default patterns.
Subconscious integration — That’s where modalities like Clinical Hypnotherapy and NLP come in. Not to overwrite your instincts, but to update the outdated ones.
